WWI: Battle Of Mons

23rd August 1914

The Battle of Mons was the first major action of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) in the First World War. The British army attempted to hold the line of the Mons-Condé Canal against the advancing German First Army. Although the British fought well and inflicted disproportionate casualties on the numerically-superior Germans, they were eventually forced to retreat due both to the greater strength of the Germans and the sudden retreat of the French Fifth Army.

Airshow in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex

2012 celebrates 21 years of the Clacton Air Show. The event organised by Tendring District Council, is a well-established free event on the Essex Sunshine Coast.

While most eyes will be looking to the skies for air displays there will be a whole host of on-site catering, trade stands and entertainment at ground level stretching along the show site on Clacton's seafront.

Each day will have a full flying programme and BBC Essex will be providing Radio Air show on 729am throughout the flying displays as well as providing live commentary.
