Frederick Roberts' begins his 300 mile march to Kandahar

8th August 1880

On 8th August 1880, with 10'000 picked British and Indian soldiers, Frederick Roberts began his 300 mile from Kabul to Kandahar, to defeat the Afghan army of Ayub Khan, pretender to the Amirship of Kabul. The march took just twenty-three days and made Roberts one of late Victorian England's great military heroes.
