Battle of Leipzig ends19th October 1813
The Battle of Leipzig or Battle of the Nations, fought between the 16th and 19th October 1813, was one of the most decisive defeats suffered by Napoleon I. The battle involved over 600,000 soldiers, making it the largest battle in Europe prior to World War I. Following the defeat, Napoleon returned to France, while the Allies kept their momentum, invading France early the next year. Napoleon was forced to abdicate, and was exiled to Elba that spring.
