Battle of Crete ends
1st June 1941Fighting against a constant supply of fresh enemy troops, the Allies began a series of retreats working southward across Crete. By May 31st the total occupation of Crete was a fact and the withdrawal of the majority of the ally forces to Egypt marked the end of the Battle of Crete. On June 1st, the remaining 5,000 defenders at Sphakia surrendered.
