WWII: Signing of Japanese Instrument of Surrender aboard USS Missouri
2nd September 1945The Japanese Instrument of Surrender was the written agreement that enabled the Surrender of Japan, marking the end of World War II. General MacArthur, Supreme Allied Commander in the Pacific, forbade any Allied forces from liberating Japanese occupied territories before he had personally taken the formal Japanese surrender, which has been argued to have cost hundreds of British and Commonwealth POW lives.
