Warfare in News

A D-Day war hero, John Stone, passed away on the day before Armistice Day at his home in Dorset, aged 89.
Mr Stone, a mine expert, was a 22-year-old Sapper Lieutenant on D-Day. He carried out a daring reconnaissance mission on the beaches of Normandy just days before the D-Day landings were to take place. His discovery of anti-tank mines on the shoreline – which would have been hidden at high tide – meant the invasion was changed to low tide.
He was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery and received a congratulatory telegram from Winston Churchill.
Mr Stone's funeral will be held on Monday at 2.30pm, at St Andrew's Church, Weymouth.
