With less than 100 days to go, the countdown to the London 2012 Olympic Games is well underway.
London first hosted the Olympics in 1908, opening on 27 April 1908. The Games that year were originally planned to be held in Naples, but London stepped forward to host following the shock eruption of Mount Vesuvius. This was the year which began the tradition of countries bidding to host the games, with London winning over both Berlin and Milan.
The funding for the 1908 games came largely from donations and many of the staff were volunteers.
British Pathé have a collection of images from the 1908 Games.
