On the anniversary of the Allied invasion of France, a statue in the likeness of Major Dick Winters, whose quiet leadership was chronicled in the Second World War book and television miniseries Band of Brothers, is being unveiled. The monument, in Sainte-Marie-du-Mont is dedicated to all junior US military officers serving that day.
Battlefield experts and authors Major and Mrs Holt were given special permission to exclusively feature a photograph of the statue in their Definitive Battlefield Guide to the D-Day Normandy Landing Beaches – the sixth edition of their best-selling guide to the area – which launches today.
The Definitive Battlefield Guide to the D-Day Normandy Landing Beaches – known as 'The Bible' of guides to the Normandy battlefields – has been selling on Amazon for as much as £450 per copy due to high demand. It is currently available at the introductory price of £13.59.
The sixth edition marks 30 years of development for the Holts' guidebook to Normandy, and its expanded and remodelled itineraries reflect changes in technology, visitors' requirements and methods of navigation, as well as including some 400 sites of interest, complete with GPS latitude and longitude locations and over 400 coloured photographs throughout the book.
