Celebrated authors and leading battlefield guide experts Major and Mrs Holt were awarded the WW1 Centenary Medal from the Conseil General de le Somme in Amiens on Wednesday, 22 January, for their contribution to 'Remembrance Tourism'. The award was one of only six medals given, and they were the only British recipients.

Tonie and Valmai described the events of last Wednesday as follows:

It was a very pleasant ceremony, with a warm spoken citation by the President of the Conseil General of the Somme (Monsieur Christian Manable), summarising the work we had done over 35 years in 'opening the door to the battlefields' to so many people with our tours, guidebooks and maps.

Present were Members of the Council, a representative from the government in Paris, the Sous-Prefet of the Department, the Director of Tourism for the Department (Francois Bergez), many local mayors and tourist officers (many of whom have become friends over the years).

Other recipients were an American Professor (Jay Winter of Cambridge University); the Canadian Director the Newfoundland Memorial Park (Arlene King); Madame Potie, Mayor for 47 years of the small hamlet of Thiepval, which contains the largest Memorial on the Western Front (bearing the names of 73,000 'Missing with no known Grave'); a distinguished German historian; a French historian and archivist of the main Museum in the area, the Historial at Peronne, and the President of the Souvenir Francais Association. Thus each of the following Nations - France, UK, Germany, Canada and America - were presented with the Centennial Medal and Valmai was delighted to be given a beautiful bouquet of flowers as well. Both of us gave a short thankyou in French (T after much rehearsal and V, who is fluent, with a little). The ceremony was followed by the customary congenial 'Vin d'Honneur' and nibbles. The event was covered by BBC South TV.
