The Queen, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, will take part in this year's 70th anniversary ceremony of the D-Day landings by attending a service in Normandy on 6 June.

Her Majesty will be guest of honour at the service which will be held on Sword Beach, the landing site of British troops during Operation Overlord - the Normandy landings.

US President Barack Obama will also be present at the ceremony which will 'allow France “to mark his eternal gratitude to its allies, while promoting a peaceful memory,' commented Minister of Foreign Affairs Kader Arif to Le Parisien.

Her Majesty did not attend the 65th anniversary ceremony, and last attended the event in honour of the 60th anniversary in 2004. The visit will form part of a state visit to France over three days in June, following an invitation for French president Francois Hollande.
