Sad news has come this Monday morning as former Army officer and explorer Henry Worsley, 55, has died after suffering severe dehydration and exhausting on his expedition to cross the Antarctic unaided.

Worsley had intended to become the first person to cross the Antarctic without any supervision or support, all the while raising £100,000 for The Endeavour Fund. His solo expedition was planned to last 80 days and he hoped to cover 1,100 miles coast-to-coast, pulling just a sledge filled with his food, tent and necessary equipment.

Alas, after battling against extreme cold, he suffered from peritonitis and was airlifted to a hospital in Punta Arenas, Chile.
