Colonel Peter Storie-Pugh, the last of the 1940 Colditz heroes, has passed away peacefully, aged 91.

He was among the first British POWs to be incarcerated at Colditz in December 1940, as a 21-year-old lieutenant. He was one of 17 British men who spent Christmas there that year and during his time there he was involved in 21 escape attempts.

Colonel Storie-Pugh never managed to escape but did not give up trying and helped others break out of the maximum security camp. When the Second World War came to an end the Americans liberated Colditz and Colonel Storie-Pugh was finally released.
