It has been an interesting few weeks on Warfare, marking several
anniversaries including the sinking of HMS Hood and the flying of
Operation Chastise, the ingenious Dambusters Raid on the dams of the
industrial Ruhr area of Germany. Susan Ottoway's account of The Life
of Guy Gibson follows Gibson's role in the raid and includes some
dramatic images of the aftermath of the attacks.

The 'Mighty Hood' was
the last battlecruiser ever built for the Royal Navy and was struck
by German shells during the Battle of Denmark Strait on 24 May 1941
and 'died in action', a huge loss for the British who were promptly
instructed by Winston Churchill to 'Sink the Bismarck'.

Warfare is thrilled to feature a second article from RAF Airman Sergeant Alex Ford, following the recent sharing of images on social media sites showing The Afghanistan You Never See, which featured in the centre spread of this week's Sunday Mirror. The photographs shared under this hashtag give insight to the work troops are carrying out day-to-day in Afghanistan, and the people they are helping there; a soldier's eye view of the positive side of Afghanistan, which is rarely covered by the media. The images have been picked up by celebrities on Twitter and retweeted over 10,000 times.

More major naval anniversaries added to Warfare this week, with an epic two-part article on the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916 - the greatest naval engagement of the First World War, if not any war. From the Great War at sea, to the War in the Far East, 4 June marks the anniversary of the Battle of Midway, six months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor the United States Navy decisively defeated an Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) attack against Midway Atoll in what has been described as 'the most stunning and decisive blow in the history of naval warfare.'

Competition
Tonie and Valmai Holt's Prize Puzzle Picture
Major and Mrs Holt founded the first organisation to offer battlefield tours to the general public in the late 1970s. Since the 1990s they have been writing their series of guide books, incorporating all that they have learned from their experiences conducting thousands of people around battlefields. This series, designed to serve as companions for travellers, whether sitting at home or physically visiting the battlefields, includes detailed travel directions, military history, fascinating anecdotes and tourist information. The Holts share the writing of their books equally and conduct all their own research, spending many weeks on the ground as they prepare each new book or update previously published titles.
Click here for a chance to win a copy of Major and Mrs Holt's Battlefield Guide to the Somme – the latest, fully updated edition with foreword by Sir Martin Gilbert, complete with full colour fold-out map, RRP £16.99.
Our previous competition to win signed copies of each book in the Devils with Wings series by Harvey Black was won by Mr David Bright, congratulations, your prize is on it's way to you.
