The God of War series is well known for its spectacular visuals, gripping and fast moving gameplay and captivating stories.
The second title to hit the PS3, God of War: Ascension is more of the same, but when the quality is this high, this is definitely a good thing. The game has been criticised in some areas for basically being more of the same but I feel this is unfair.
Graphically the game is spectacular and probably one of the most jaw dropping games of this generation. Granted, it isn't a massive step up from the third game but considering how good that looked its only to be expected. The game world is as detailed as ever and Kratos' animations and those of the various baddies are spectacular. The game maintains its gory and violent visuals, so this is definitely one for adults only.
I felt the story fitted in well with that of the series and fills in some more gaps as to the background of Kratos and the tragic events that unfold around him. I don't want to spoil the story here, but suffice to say fans of the series won't be disappointed!
The game controls as well as ever and whilst there have been changes; mainly the weapons being limited to the Blades of Chaos; this soon feels natural and upgrading your tools is quickly an addictive part of the game.
New in this installment is the multiplayer mode and I admit to initially feeling quite nervous about this. I couldn't really see how it could work and was worried that it might have been shoehorned into the game as seems to be the case these days. I needn't have worried as the multiplayer is very good. Its clear that the developer has spent a lot of time thinking this through and the end result is a multiplayer game that is extremely well balanced and most importantly, a lot of fun!
God of War: Ascension is another fantastic title in the series and highly recommended to both fans of the series and newcomers alike. I can't wait to see what Sony do with God of War on the PS4, but think we might have to wait some time for that. In the meantime, go out and buy God of War: Ascension, you won't be disappointed.
